The Angus Golf Trail

Here in the very gateway to the Highlands James Braid created some of the finest inland golf to be found anywhere. Peace and tranquility are his legacy in a stunning landscape of fir trees, bracken and heather set against a majestic mountain backdrop.

Alyth Golf Course
There have been changes since Braid remodelled the course in 1933 but his signature is still readily seen amid the heather and the gorse.

Blairgowrie Golf Course (Rosemount)
James Braid made alterations to the original layout of Alister MacKenzie to produce one of the finest and most beautiful inland courses in the British Isles

Brechin Golf Course
Set among splendid Angus scenery midway between Dundee and Aberdeen, Brechin Golf Club is a relatively flat parkland layout which enjoys scenic views of the Grampians from many of its holes. James Braid redesigned the original course in 1926.

Downfield Golf Course
One of the finest inland courses in the world was how five-times Open Champion Peter Thomson once described Downfield.

Edzell Golf Course
Peace and tranquility here. A superb test on beautiful heathland turf with the disused railway line one of the most obvious hazards.

Forfar Golf Course
Another of James Braid's inland classics. Superb heathland turf and many excellent holes.

The Links Golf Trail
In the hinterland of his home town of Elie in the East Neuk of Fife James Braid has left to the world of golf some of his finest creations. Classic links exposed to the vagaries of wind and tide; golf robust and challenging and yet almost spiritual in the beauty of its surroundings

Arbroath Golf Course
Another of Braid's traditional links. Although less well known, well worth seeking out.

Carnoustie Golf Course
A Braid masterpiece, Carnoustie is considered by many to be the finest test of championship golf in the world. Braid's 1926 design has seen only few detail changes since.

Elie Golf Course
James Braid was born in Earlsferry beside the Elie links but ironically he had no real input into the design or layout of the present course.

Lundin Golf Course
A classic Braid layout which is an Open Championship qualifying course when the Open is in St Andrews.

Panmure Golf Course
A delightful and testing links. Were it not for its close proximity to Carnoustie it would enjoy a much higher profile.

Scotscraig Golf Course
An Open Championship qualifying course when the Open is at St Andrews. A fine combination of links land and heathland golf with accuracy the premium.

The Gleneagles Golf Trail
It was here in the heart of Perthshire that James Braid created what is widely regarded as his masterpiece. The majestic setting of the Kings and Queens courses at the famous Gleneagles Hotel stand as a monument to his contribution to the game as a golf course builder.

Alloa Golf Course
An original Braid design laid out in 1936 and which has changed little in the intervening years. Pleasant undulating parkland.

Crieff Golf Course
There have been changes here since Braid remodelled the course in 1924 but the character of this fine inland course remains

Glenbervie Golf Course
Located amidst mature trees with outstanding views of the Ochil Hills. Glenverbie has twice hosted the British boys' Championship and has been used for many years by the R & A as a regional qualifying venue for the Open Championship.

Gleneagles Golf Courses (Kings & Queens)
The two Gleneagles courses designed by James Braid are considered by many to be his finest legacy to golf course architecture. Wonderful golf in a spectacular setting.

Taymouth Castle Golf Course
A beautiful inland layout beside the River Tay. Some of the tallest Douglas Fir trees in the world surround the golf course.

The Lothian Golf Trail
It is in the Lothians that much of the very earliest history of golf is contained. The ghosts of ancient golfing combat still roam the links on the shores of the Firth of Forth and it is here that Braid has added his own special legacy to golf in the shadow of Scotland¿s capital city.

Dalmahoy Golf Courses (East & West)
A big inland golf course which has hosted many important Scottish amateur and professional events since Braid laid it out in 1927. Recently undergone a £1m upgrade to the East Course.

Lothianburn Golf Course
Not long by some standards but this Edinburgh course, redesigned by Braid in 1928, remains a very enjoyable test.

Ratho Park Golf Course
Braid's design in this flat parkland setting is similar but a little less testing than its near neighbour at Dalmahoy.

Royal Musselburgh Golf Course
Braid with his famous Triumvirate partners, Harry Vardon and J H Taylor, together with Sandy Herd officially opened his design in 1926.

West Linton Golf Course
Beautiful turf here on this well-drained undulating moorland where Braid made alterations to the original nine-hole layout in 1927.

The Highland Golf Trail
Some of James Braid¿s finest work is celebrated in this outpost in the far north of Scotland where the air is as clear as the Highland burn. This is the land where Braid weaved his magic amid classic seaside links and in mysterious Highland glens.

Boat of Garten Golf Course
Glorious scenery, wonderful heathland turf and some very fine holes are the hallmarks of the picturesque layout that Braid updated in 1931/32.

Brora Golf Course
One of the great treasure of Scottish links golf, Brora was redesigned by Braid in 1924 and is now home of the James Braid Golfing Society.

Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Course
A stone of the 17th century claims to mark the burning of the last witch in Scotland on this tight links course on Chanonry Ness where Braid twice made alterations.

Golspie Golf Course
Elements of links, heathland and parkland blend well to provide the interestiing challenge beside the Dornoch Firth.

Nairn Golf Course
One of Scotland's finest links courses with greens which many believe to be the best in the country. Home of the famous GB&I Walker Cup victory in 1999.

The West Coast Golf Trail
The west coast of Scotland is a haven of romantic seascapes and spectacular scenery. James Braid worked his magic through these poetic settings to create a wonderful collection of fine courses of great variety and challenge. It was here at Stranraer that he completed his final course.

Ayr Bellisle Golf Course
Widely recognised as one of the finest municipal courses in the British Isles, Belleisle was laid out by Braid in 1921.

Irvine Golf Course
Braid's Irvine design cost the members eight guineas plus expenses back in 1926. It remains as stiff a test today as it did then.

Routenburn Golf Course
Spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde but this is a parkland layout. Famous as the home club of golf teaching guru Bob Torrance, this is where his son Sam learnt to play the game.

Stranraer Golf Course
The last course designed by James Braid with outstanding views and many challenging holes. It ends with the aptly named "Braid's Last".

West Kilbride Golf Course
Braid twice made alterations to this beautiful links course with its wonderful views of Arran and the Ailsa Craig. The last was in 1923.
