Legal Requirements for Marriage in Scotland
Scottish law imposes various requirements on Couples who wish to be legally married in Scotland. These are listed below. As an alternative to an official wedding, you may wish to have a blessing ceremony for which there are no legal constraints.
Whichever you choose, Highland Wedding Bells can arrange your wedding or blessing ceremony to suit your individual needs. Please note that for marriages, you will need to make contact with the local registrar - information about this is given on the official web site for the General Register Office for Scotland which is the Government department responsible for the registration of marriages in the UK.
Any two persons may marry in Scotland provided that:

- they are not of the same sex
- they are capable of understanding the nature of a marriage ceremony and of consenting to marriage
- the marriage would be regarded as valid in any foreign country to which either party belongs.

- Both birth certificates
- If you are a divorcee a proof of Decree Absolute
- If you are a widow/widower - the death certificate of your former spouse
IF YOU ARE DOMICILED OUTSIDE THE UNITED KINGDOM
